The second port stop on our Mediterranean cruise was Katakolon, Greece. Katakolon is located in the Peloponnese which is a peninsula on the southern portion of Greece. It is a small coastal town not far from Olympia.

The biggest tourist attraction for this port is Ancient Olympia, featuring the ruins of temples and statues and the site of the inaugaral Ancient Olympic Games. For thousands of years, athletes from across the Greek world would gather and comepte in honor of Zeus. Victors were crowned with olive wreaths which symbolized honorand glory. At the Ancient Olympia site you can see the ruins of Zeus and Hera's temples and the original Olympic track where men would run 600 meters for Olympic glory.

We finished off our tour with a quick run through the Archiological museum. The museum houses the statues and other ancient items that have been found at the Ancient Olympia site.

Our ship was late making port in Katakolon so we did not have alot of time to explore the museum. Our tour guide was wonderful though. He was very knowledgable about the ruins and the artifacts in the museum. This port was worth visiting and exploring the Ancient Olympia site. It is not one of the more popular Greek ports, but I enjoyed the excursion to the ancient ruins. To see more pictures from our time in Katakolon check out the photo portfolio!
